Ermington

Introduction

Ermington lies 19km north-west of Sydney's CBD on the northern bank of the Parramatta River. It was originally part of the area known as the Field of Mars, which was sub-divided and handed out as land grants by Governor Arthur Phillip as far back as 1792. Once a hub for agricultural ventures, it is now a residential suburb attracting largely families and professionals. There are a number of schools in the area, including Marsden High School, which reflects the family orientation of the area.

Large-scale sub-division was undertaken in the ‘40s, as evidenced by the significant number of post-war houses which were originally built to accommodate returned servicemen and their families. Since the Sydney property boom in the early 2000s, Ermington has had a wave of young families settle here in search of affordable houses. In 2006 the site of the former Ermington Naval Storage Depot was cleared for development of Riverwalk Estate, featuring upmarket riverside housing. With the growing infrastructure taking place in the nearby retail and commercial epicentre of Parramatta, Ermington looks set to continue its recent growth.
